A fourth-grader raised $1,800 by selling decals to help buy sheetrock for her neighbors’ flooded homes.
A pastor’s wife organized Wilmington’s largest hurricane relief hub using a pad of paper and the wifi coming from her car.
An EC teacher cleaned homes and babysat chef’s children so that they could serve food to storm victims.
These are just a few of the 42 heroes honored at the United Way of the Cape Fear Area’s “Night of Heroes,” held at Bakery 105 on November 15th. Among the 200 people in attendance, honorees with ages ranging from 11-65 donned floor length super hero capes with the words “Here for Cape Fear” printed on the back. Guest were treated to food and drinks, meet and greets with over 20 local charitable organizations, and the stories of several largely “unsung” community heroes.
Said UWCFA Director of Marketing and Communications, Jamie Nelson, ”

Dr. Chris Prentice, Shaun Olsen, Charlie Mattox and Laurie Feezor were among the honorees for their service during Hurricane Florence Relief.
Not only did we want to celebrate those who made a difference in someone else’s life, but we wanted also to inspire others to help our community in ways large and small.”
Each honoree will also be featured on UWCFA’s social media throughout the months of December and January. If you know of another community hero who you think deserves a pat on the back (and a floor length cape,) send and email to info@uwcfa.org.
