I’m Pete Miller and I am the Director of Relationship Development for the United Way of the Cape Fear Area. I grew up with 3 brothers and 1 sister and our parents always encouraged us to give back to our community in any way possible. We were introduced to volunteering in the communities we lived in at a young age and I have continued to volunteer and financially support different non-profits as I have gotten older. I have worked for different non-profit organizations for over 20 years. I began working in non-profits with Catholic Charities working in a group home for emotionally disturbed youth. I then spent 10 years working for the Arc Otsego as an Individual Program Coordinator and then a Site Coordinator for developmentally disabled adults. I spent the last 8 ½ years working for the Boy Scouts of America as a District Executive, Senior District Executive and Field Director.
I am very excited to join the United Way of the Cape Fear Area team. I was drawn to my new role because I have a passion for development. I enjoy showing individuals and businesses how their financial support has helped our agency partners be more successful. I have been lucky enough to work for an agency partner of multiple local United Way’s during the years and to see how the financial support of the United Way allowed us to provide scholarships to young men and women in our programs. I am looking forward to building new relationships with businesses in the four counties we serve and to grow the campaigns that we have been working on over the years.
I played many sports growing up ie: baseball, basketball, soccer, football, volleyball. When I went to college, I played rugby. I went to college as a mass media communications major and a theatre arts major. I worked in a middle school as an LTA in special education before working for non-profit organizations. I was a Camp Director for a high adventure camp in the Adirondack Mountains in NY and I also worked for a baseball camp for a few summers as a member of the medical staff team.
My wife and I have 3 children and a lot of our time is spent doing activities with them, watching them participate in sports, dance, Scouts and seeing them grow up to be the best adults they can be. I do enjoy doing woodworking projects, playing golf, fishing, and outdoor activities in my free time.
I have worked with many teams over the years as both a team member and a leader and I am looking forward to working with the team that is assembled at the United Way of the Cape Fear Area.
