The following message was received at the Cape Fear Council- Boy Scouts of America from a community member in need, Miss Sophia:
“I am substitute teacher who does not receive income while the children are out for the summer. I have spent 43 days without A/C. Early in July, Section 8 issued me a moving voucher. I found a place within a week. I have to be out of my current residence by Aug. 31/2019. I have no money, no vehicle, and/or people to help me move. Please help...”
Longtime scout volunteer Bill Turner quickly replied, “Yes! We will have a crew from Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church... Troop 26 is ready to help!"
"Taking time on a Saturday, holiday weekend is asking a lot," said Turner. "We hoped to recruit 5 to 10 volunteers."
About 30 scouts arrived for the safety check and the project began with a whirlwind of activity. The deployment of so many scouts required order and discipline, a specialty of this troop.
"The first part was completed way ahead of schedule, and the loaded truck hauled an apartment full of personal belongings to her new home," noted Turner.
When the last item was moved into Miss Sophia's new apartment, the scouts gave her a grand welcome to her new abode.
Sophia asked to say a few words to the troop assembled:
"My appreciation is so overwhelming, once you have gone, I will spend the next hour crying. What you have done today is wonderful. Thank you!" ... See MoreSee Less
