Volunteer FAQ
There are multiple ways to easily get involved! You can visit our page on Share Cape Fear, view upcoming volunteer opportunities on our calendar (located on our Volunteering page), or contact us directly. You can call 910-798-3900 x103 or email us at angela.fernot@uwcfa.org .
In most cases, yes! We aim to help as many organizations in our region as possible. Oftentimes, we will prioritize opportunities with organizations we fund or have previously partnered with. If you don’t see an existing opportunity with an organization you care about, let us know and we will see what we can do.
It works the same way! We’re here to help you take action to make positive change. The more, the merrier.
United Way of the Cape Fear Area is not equipped to handle community service hours at this time. We are happy to connect you with another organization ready to help.
It depends on the volunteer opportunity. We encourage Board and Cabinet members to dress comfortably during their service. For on site or in the field volunteers, we generally recommend casual clothing with close toed shoes. If an alternative dress code should be followed we will provide that information as well as other safety details (or waivers) once we receive those from the host organization.
Some opportunities may include working with heavy equipment and power tools or other risks. Our partners are thorough in their attention to detail and their concern for your safety. To ensure all participants understand any potential risks and corresponding responsibilities, Waivers are sometimes required.. These will be provided with return instructions prior to the volunteer opportunity.
Our Outreach Coordinator will reach out to you directly if you have initiated interest in a volunteer opportunity. If you do not hear from us within 7 days of signing up, please reach out to angela.fernot@uwcfa.org.
We don’t currently offer any apps, but are building out our volunteer program to be able to track your hours in the future. At this time, we recommend you keep a note on your mobile device.
Our current method is to provide a calendar invitation to the team leader that includes a date, time, and details of the volunteer event. Team leads can then disperse the information to their organization however they choose. Upon request, we can also provide a written document with opportunity details.
